WE REMEMBER: Honouring Our Canadian Armed Forces (Volume 4)

In honour of the brave men and women that serve and have served in the Canadian Armed Forces, and to honour the many who have given the ultimate sacrifice; we will be promoting books each day this week that shed light on what it is like to serve.

 

Today we honour those who fought and died in World War II. Canadians fought on land, in the seas, and in the skies in both the Pacific and European theatres of war. Almost 47,000 Canadians were killed, over 58,000 were wounded, over 8,900 were taken prisoner.

 

Today we have chosen a selection of books that we hope provide a look at the numerous ways Canadians took part in World War II.

 

Amazing Airmen: Canadian Flyers in the Second World War

Canadian and British airmen engaged in fierce and deadly battles in the skies over Europe during the Second World War. These are the stories of those who survived and overcame incredible obstacles – dodging bullets, escaping from burning planes, and evading capture by German troops.

These painstakingly researched stories will enable you to feel what now-aging veterans endured when they were young men in the air war against Nazi Germany.

 

White Ensign Flying: Corvette HMCS Trentonian

The Brigade was only active for two and a half years, but their exploits earned them a fierce reputation. This book recounts their actions in the European theatre of war and how they earned the nickname, “The Devil’s Brigade”.
