Jeep CJ 1972-1986: How to Build & Modify
Identifying the Jeep CJ series vehicles as the most popular off-road vehicles of all time may actually qualify as an understatement. They really are that popular. The CJ series arguably started after World War II with the CJ-2A being introduced to the masses, and while the early CJs have their share of enthusiasts, the largest group of enthusiasts began their love affair with the AMC-powered Jeep CJ-5s beginning in 1972. Joined by the longer-wheelbase CJ-7 models introduced in 1976, the CJ models were wildly popular through their discontinuation in 1986, when the Wrangler was introduced. These were the only models originally equipped with V-8 engines in any meaningful way. This era combined the ruggedness of the early Jeeps with some of the advancements and horsepower of a more modern era; it makes a platform that is both fun to own and to modify. In Jeep CJ 1972-1986: How to Build & Modify, Jeep guru Michael Hanssen covers all of the systems that can be upgraded to improve your Jeep's performance. Upgrades include suspension components such as springs, shocks, and steering modifications; driveline components including differentials, transmissions, transfer cases, and axles; engine upgrades including engine swaps; wheel and tire upgrades; aftermarket accessories; armor such as skid plates and bumpers; brake upgrades; and more. Whether you are looking to get into serious off-roading or just want to make your classic CJ a little more fun, this book will be a valuable tool in your shop or library.

Jeep CJ-5 & CJ-7 4×4 Performance Portfolio 1987-1999
The 4x4 market changed in the 1960s, from utility to one with an increasing emphasis on the leisure market. In the 1970s the CJ range was aimed more at the recreational sector and the CJ-7 was designed with more room, simpler transmission and an automatic gearbox. The CJ-5 took on some of these extra features and until 1983 the two models were developed very much in parallel. Special package versions were issued to please buyers. The Wrangler took over from the CJ in 1986. This is a book of road and comparison tests, specification and technical data, new model intro's, off-road reports. Jeep models covered include: 4, 6, and 8-cylinders, Renegade, Golden Eagle, Diesel, Limited, Overlander.

Jeep TJ 1997-2006: How to Build & Modify
The Jeep CJ, the icon that started it all, is the most popular off-road vehicle of all time. The look, style, and functionality of the CJ made it instantly popular and recognizable the world over, in no doubt partly due to its military presence in World War II. The Jeep Wrangler platform had the difficult task of replacing the extremely popular CJ platform. Outwardly similar in appearance, the YJ, TJ, and JK that followed all had significant design improvements, as can be expected when a platform has a life span of more than five decades. The YJ was the first Chrysler release after it purchased AMC in the mid-1980s, and it was aimed at taming the original CJ for more comfort and, arguably, a larger audience. The TJ that followed next was an evolutionary update, significant in that it featured a coil spring suspension and the celebrated return of round headlights, for a more traditional look compared to the square lights of the YJ. In Jeep TJ 1997-2006: How to Build & Modify, everything you need to know about how to modify your TJ for off-road use is covered. Beginning with why you should choose a TJ for modification, Jeep expert Michael Hanssen takes you through all the different systems needing modification, including engine modifications and swaps, transmission swaps, transfer case and driveshafts modifications, axles and traction systems, suspensions and lifts, wheels, tires, brakes, chassis protection, electrical, and winches. Included in every chapter are step-by-step modification instructions to help walk you through the process. If you want to build a TJ for serious off-road trail use, or you just want a capable and great-looking Jeep for around town, this book has you covered.

Jeep Wrangler JK 2007-Present: Performance Upgrades
Since its release in 2007, the JK has become wildly popular and nearly 1 million units have been sold in North America. With a wider track and longer wheelbase, the Wrangler JK is roomier, more comfortable, and delivers better on-road performance than its predecessor. However, it needs serious chassis, suspension, and drivetrain upgrades to tackle demanding off-road terrain and rock crawling. A full complement of heavy-duty suspension, chassis, steering, drivetrain, and high-performance engine parts has been developed for this platform. Co-authors Don Alexander and Quinn Thomas offer comprehensive guidance for making key modifications and selecting the best parts to transform your JK into a superior off-road performer. Lift kits from 1.75 to 5 inches are available, so you can fit off-road wheels and tires for exceptional traction. Suspension springs, specially calibrated coil-over shocks, and sway bars must work in concert to provide the correct suspension articulation and ride quality to scale obstacles and negotiate terrain. To increase durability and essential reliability, pitman arms, drop links, driveline parts, steering boxes, and skid plates are examined. Because the drivetrain must be ready for off-road service, the authors cover the most rugged and reliable axle assemblies available. Exhaust, intake, and electronic engine mapping upgrades make the Jeep 3.6- and 3.8-liter V-6 engines much more potent. It also includes how to swap GM LS and new Hemi engines into the JK for vastly improved performance. If you believe that paved roads are simply access-ways to the open range, you and your JK need this book. It contains the vital information to convert any mild-mannered street vehicle into an all-conquering off-road rig. Whether it's lift kits, wheels, tires, drivetrain, or suspension and engine parts, this volume provides detailed information, insightful guidance, and installation instructions, so you build an off-road JK to handle the toughest terrain.

Jeep Wrangler: 4×4 Performance Portfolio 1987-1999
This successor to the CJ Jeeps was designed for use as every day transport rather than as a utility vehicle. Nevertheless the Wrangler was still in the mould of the earlier vehicles having a basic open tub body with occasional seating for four although the chassis components were biased towards road use. The low-profiles tires improved the handling. The trend continued when the original YJ gave way to the redesigned TJ model in 1996. Coil springs were used for comfort and airbags came as standard. This is a book of contemporary road and comparison tests, specification, new model introductions, driver's impressions, long term tests, off road experience. Models covered include: YJ, Laredo, Sahara, Renegade, S, Islander, Sport, TJ, SE.

Jeep: The History of America’s Greatest Vehicle
The definitive, fully illustrated celebration of an auto manufacturer that paved its own way by going off-road. Few American vehicles, or vehicles made anywhere else in the world for that matter, are as universally iconic as the Jeep. From olive drab WWII military relics to the beloved Wrangler with its rear-mounted spare tire, open-air design, and telltale roll cage, the Jeep is a true classic. In Jeep: The History of America’s Greatest Vehicle, automotive writer Patrick R. Foster chronicles over 70 years of Jeep vehicle design and production. Beginning with the Jeep as a crucial component of the American World War II fleet, Foster expertly recounts the corporate shifts, financial struggles and successes, close calls, and—above all—the enduring machines that have carried Jeep from the early 1940s to its triumphant role as a modern-day embodiment of American perseverance. Three hundred color and black-and-white historical photos complement his expertly written narrative of Jeep’s entire history, reminding us that sometimes, the road less traveled was just waiting for the right truck.

Jeepster & Commando Limited Edition 1967-1973
Having been discontinued in 1948 the Jeepster name was revived in 1967. In the Mid-sixties the recreational vehicle market had blossomed and manufacturers were rapidly filling the void. The Jeepster was introduced as a blend of a street and off-road machine with extra lifestyle luxuries added to its specification. With the take-over by American Motors the bodywork received a cosmetic makeover. The Commando became the workhorse station wagon in its various guises. By 1972 the Jeepster name had again been dropped as the Commando lived on with a roadster, pickup and a station wagon. This is a book of contemporary road and comparison tests, technical information, buyer's guide, new model intro's, driver's impressions. Models covered include:- roadster, hardtop, convertible, pick-up, station wagon.

Off Road Jeeps: Civilian & Military 1944-1971
In June 1940 the US Quarter-master Corps published requirements for a compact 4x4, quarter-ton truck. Thus the GPW was born and the name shortened to (Jeep?. Comfort was bottom of the heap of design priorities and all fours seats, and the ride, were hard. But the hastily conceived design was inherently right and over 600,000 were made up to 1945 with endless variations. After the war Willys plugged on with the Jeep in civilian CJ-2A form providing cheap, practical transport in austere times. This is a book of contemporary road tests, technical data, model introductions, military details, camouflage painting, operating details, history. Models covered include:- CJ-2A, CJ-3A, CJ-5, M38, CJ-3B, M606, 381A, 28, 29, 606A2, 606A3, 170, 422, 151.
