1968 Shelby Mustang GT350, GT500 and GT500KR: Muscle Cars In Detail No. 3
There were Mustangs, and then there were Mustangs. Ford wanted its new little Pony Car to appeal to the masses, and in executing that plan, the Mustang could be had in anything from a plain-Jane version with an economical 6-cylinder engine (often referred to as a "secretary’s car"), all the way up to the sporty GT models with optional 271-hp V-8s. Unfortunately, although road-going Mustangs were considered sporty, they were not officially sports cars, at least according to the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). And Lee Iacocca knew that on-track performance led to showroom performance, so he needed to go racing. Enter Carroll Shelby. Shelby worked with the SCCA to modify the Mustang to meet the SCCA's requirements and enter the racing arena. The result was the now-legendary Shelby Mustang.
This volume of CarTech's In Detail series covers the 1968 Shelby GT350, GT500, and GT500KR. In 1968, Ford sought to take over much of the process of producing Shelby Mustangs and increased that production dramatically to meet anticipated sales demand, so it was a bit of a transition year. In an effort to appeal to muscle car fans rather than race fans, the cars were losing their edgy race car feel and were becoming more high-end performance road cars with a long list of performance and comfort options including 428 Cobra Jet Engines, automatic transmissions, and air conditioning. They may have no longer been sports cars, but they were now fantastic muscle cars.
As in all In Detail Series books, you get an introduction and historical overview, an explanation of the design and concepts involved in creating the car, a look at marketing and promotion, and an in-depth study of all hardware and available options, as well as an examination of where the car is on the market today. Also included is an appendix of paint and option codes, VIN and build tag decoders, as well as production numbers.
1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Muscle Cars In Detail No. 9
By the time the 1969 model year rolled around, it was well established that muscle cars were fast and plentiful. Every manufacturer had at least one corner of the showroom where the "go fast" guys could congregate and discuss the merits and time slips of the latest performance offerings. Competition being what it was, the manufacturers were looking for ways to get potential buyers to choose their product rather than the increasing number of offerings from the competition. Some manufacturers accomplished this with affordable prices, some tried fancy marketing schemes, and some created a look and a style that screamed "performance," even when standing still.
Volume No. 9 of CarTech's In Detail series covers the 1969 Mustang Mach I. This model was Ford's attempt to create a package and a style to match the performance of its recently released and very potent 428-ci Cobra Jet engine package. Displacing the still available but more conservative GT trim, the Mach I included unique and innovative graphics as well as mechanical innovations including shaker hood scoops, dual racing mirrors, deluxe interiors, competition suspension, dual chrome exhaust tips, and blacked-out hoods. The end result was a wildly popular model that sold more than 70,000 units, compared to slightly more than 5,000 GT models, for the year.
Each volume in the In Detail Series provides an introduction and historical overview, an explanation of the design and concepts involved in creating the car, a look at marketing and promotion, an in-depth study of all hardware and available options, and an examination of where the car is on the market today. Also included are paint and option codes, VIN and build tag decoders, as well as production numbers.

Carroll Shelby: A Collection of My Favorite Racing Photos
Art Evans was a sports car racer in the 1950s on the West Coast who raced against, and became close friends with, Carroll Shelby. Their intense competition on the track became a lifelong friendship off the track. He and Shelby collaborated on many business projects over the years, including books, marketing projects, projects for the Shelby Foundation, and so on. In his later years, Shelby loved the books about his cars and similar topics, but his eyesight was failing to the point where he had difficulty reading, and really preferred the books that were heavy with photos.
It was from that realization that Shelby and Evans decided to work on one last book together. They both combed through the Shelby archives and selected Shelby's favorite images from his racing career. That is almost the entirety of this book. It is packed with photos selected by Shelby himself, and the captions are quotes from Shelby's commentary on the action in the photo, as well as his memories.
Unfortunately, Carroll Shelby passed away before the book was fully completed, but Evans, following Shelby's instructions, carried this final project through to completion. Filled with images that have never been seen in print, as well as images not published since the 1950s and 1960s, this final work from Shelby is a personally curated collection by the legend himself. If you are a sports car racing fan, Ford fan, Shelby fan, or any combination of the three, this book is a perfect addition to your automotive library.

Muscle Cars in Detail: 1969-1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429
Not to be outdone by Chrysler, Ford had to build and field its own race-duty big-block to compete with the 426 Hemi in drag and stock car racing. In competition trim, the Boss 429 powered Ford and Mercury stock cars to victory in NASCAR and the Mustang to many wins in drag racing. With this exclusive racing pedigree, the Boss 429 is among the most valuable and rare Mustangs ever built.
The project was the brainchild of Bunkie Knudsen, noted stylist Larry Shinoda, and other talented Ford personnel. The semi-hemi Boss 429 was so large, it couldn't fit in the small Mustang, so Kar-Kraft, a specialty car builder, had to shoehorn the engine into the compact Mustang fastback. Author Dan Burrill gives you the straight story on the Boss 429, its special equipment, 429 engine, 4-speed Toploader transmission, interior appointments, paint codes, and options. Also featured is the exciting story of developing this monumental engine, engineering the components and parts to fit the engine and chassis, and assembling the cars.

Mustang by Design: Gale Halderman and the Creation of Ford’s Iconic Pony Car
Without question, the 1964-1/2 Mustang is one of the most important and influential cars in automotive history. When Ford launched the Mustang, it created an automotive revolution. Award-winning designer and stylist Gale Halderman was at the epicenter of the action at Ford, and, in fact, his initial design sketch formed the basis of the new Mustang. He reveals his involvement in the project as well as telling the entire story of the design and development of the Mustang.
Authors and Mustang enthusiasts James Dinsmore and James Halderman go beyond the front doors at Ford into the design center, testing grounds, and Ford facilities to get the real, unvarnished story. Gale Halderman offers a unique behind-the-scenes perspective and firsthand account of the inception, design, development, and production of the original Mustang. With stinging losses from the Edsel fresh in minds at Ford, the Mustang project was an uphill battle from day one. Lee Iacocca and his assembled team had a herculean task to convince Henry Ford II to take a risk on a new concept of automobile, but with the help of Hal Sperlich's detailed market research, the project received the green light. Henry Ford II made it clear that jobs were on the line, including Iacocca's, if it failed.
The process of taking a car from sketch to clay model to prototype to preproduction and finally finished model is retraced in insightful detail. During the process, many fascinating experimental cars, such as the Mustang I two-seater, Mustang II prototype, Mustang Allegro, and Shorty, were built. But eventually the Mustang, based on the existing Ford Falcon, received the nod for final production. In a gala event, it was unveiled at the 1964 World's Fair in New York. The Mustang received public accolades and critical acclaim, and soon it became a runaway hit. After the initial success, Ford designers and Gale Halderman designed and developed the first fastback Mustangs to complement the coupes. The classic Mustang muscle cars to follow, including the GT, Mach 1, and others, are profiled as well.
The Mustang changed automotive history and ushered in the pony car era as a nimble, powerful, and elegantly styled sports coupe. But it could so easily have stumbled and wound up on the scrap pile of failed new projects. This is the remarkable and dramatic story of how the Mustang came to life, the demanding design and development process, and, ultimately, the triumph of the iconic American car.
Mustang Race Cars
The unmistakable influence of the Mustang on the racing world is seen here in endurance and drag, Trans Am, and GT racing. This major volume draws on the history of factory and privately sponsored efforts to lavishly chronicle the history of factory-produced models that have been put to the test as racing machines. Vivid historical and contemporary images reveal Mustang's 35+ years of competitive racing history.

Mustang: Une américaine en France
This is a French-language text.
The Ford Mustang is an essential element of American automotive history and has a special image in France, perpetuated by enthusiasts who maintain the dream. She appeared at the cinema in the 1960s in A Man and a Woman, who won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1966 and in Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez and quickly became the star car with Johnny and Sylvie, Sheila and Ringo, Mike Brant, Dick Rivers, Claude François, and so many others who drove her with happiness. The Mustang is also the car of sports participation, from the Tour de France Auto to the Monte-Carlo Rally, passing by the car of Henry Ford II at the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1966, where Ferrari knees down, without forgetting all national, regional and historic rallies, to famous or obscure competitors. And the Mustang is also featured in the Tour de France cycling caravan with Anquetil, Geminiani, Blondin. Seen from its windshield, here is the novel that unfolds before her in France, at different periods of her life.

Shelby Mustang: Racer for the Street
When Ford wanted to add some spice to its new Mustang pony car in the mid-1960s, it turned to the talented, colorful, and opinionated Texan Carroll Shelby, who was then building the high-performance, Ford-powered Cobra racing sports car . The result: the Shelby Mustang GT350, perhaps the definitive performance Mustang of the muscle car era.
Ford released its newest Mustang in 2005, the first truly all-new Mustang since 1979, returning the model to the spotlight. The most-talked-about versions of the new Mustang have been those with the Shelby name. Shelby himself was directly involved in defining what is the most powerful factory-produced Mustang ever. This up-to-the-minute history from award-winning authors Randy Leffingwell and David Newhardt traces the Shelby Mustang story from the early Shelby American cars built in a converted airplane hangar in Southern California to the 2010 version of the new Shelby Mustang.
Shelby Mustang: The Total Performance Pony Car
Shelby Mustang details the entire story of these fantastic cars, from the early prototypes built in Shelby's Los Angeles shop to today's Ford-engineered high-tech performers.
Written by one of the world's foremost authorities on Shelby automobiles, critically acclaimed author Colin Comer, and with a foreword by Lee Iacocca, the American automobile executive credited with the successful development of the Mustang, this is the definitive account of the Shelby.
When Ford wanted to toughen up its super-successful new Mustang, they approached Carroll Shelby to give it the performance image it so sorely lacked. Beginning with a 1965 "K-Code" 289-cubic-inch-powered Mustang fastback, Shelby applied the same formula that had made his Cobra sports cars such devastating performers both on and off the track: more horsepower, less weight, balanced handling.
The GT350 quickly established itself as a bonafide force in SCCA B-Production racing, twisting back roads, and boulevards alike---setting the course for future Shelby Mustangs, like the big-block GT500. Though those original Shelby Mustangs were done by 1970, Ford dusted off its Shelby relationship in 2006 and has been producing high-performance Ford Mustang Shelbys ever since.
This is a must-have read for any fan of American performance cars, whether you're a
