1971 Plymouth ‘Cuda: Muscle Cars In Detail No. 2
When the Barracuda arrived in the Plymouth lineup in mid-1964, it was given an unbearable task: compete against the new Ford Mustang. Out the gate, it was outsold by a 6 to 1 margin. Barracuda could always compete with Mustang in the performance category, but aesthetically it just wasn't accepted like its Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro counterparts. That was until 1970, when a complete re-design in the E-Body platform turned the tide. In terms of performance, the 1970-1974 Barracudas and Challengers were every bit the measure of the Ford and GM offerings.
By 1971, the handsome Barracuda had established itself as one of the best-performing cars in the marketplace. Ordering the 'Cuda, owners could lay waste to Mustang and Camaro owners with such stout engine packages as the 440-6 and 426 Hemi. Sales numbers never did match that of its cross-town rivals, but in the end, the 1971 'Cuda won the war. No other mass-production Pony Car can consistently claim asking prices of $2,000,000 for its top model (in today's prices).
Each volume in the In Detail Series provides an introduction and historical overview, an explanation of the design and concepts involved in creating the car, a look at marketing and promotion, an in-depth study of all hardware and available options, as well as an examination of where the car is on the market today. Also included are paint and option codes, VIN and build tag decoders, as well as production numbers.

MOPAR Muscle: Barracuda, Dart & Valiant 1960-1980
At the dawn of the 1960s, Chrysler Corp introduced a new kind of sophisticated family car called the Valiant. The Plymouth Valiant, and its cousin the Dodge Dart, travelled Detroit's path from economy car to high-performance machine in style. Snazzier still, were the subsequent Plymouth Barracuda and Dodge Challenger relations that took on all comers in the pony and muscle car wars. By the mid '70s a change of pace saw Dodge Aspen and Plymouth Volare meet the blend of economy, sports and luxury that buyers wanted. All through the years, and underpinning all models, was Chrysler Corp's engineering excellence. Such excellence was apparent on racetracks and drag strips across the country, so too were the exploits of racing heroes that became Mopar legends. Through hard times and corporate change, Chrysler returned with the modern Hemi V8 motorvated 300s, Chargers and Challengers. The Demon still lives at Highland Park.
Muscle Cars in Detail: 1969 Plymouth Road Runner
The late 1960s was an interesting time in the automotive world. Muscle cars, as we now know them, were well established, with all manufacturers joining the horsepower race. You could walk into the showroom for any brand from any manufacturer and find a variety of performance models. Competition being what it is, the manufacturers were looking for ways other than winning races to lure buyers into the showrooms and entice them to buy their products. Some tried to accomplish this with fancy marketing schemes and graphic paint packages and decals, and for the first time, some tried to win over buyers with price.
Volume No. 5 of CarTech's In Detail series covers the 1969 Plymouth Road Runner. It was an interesting marriage of a car that attempted to appeal to potential buyers with a low cost, light weight, and potent bare-bones package. It also added a brilliant marketing strategy of partnering with a famous studio and a popular cartoon character. The end result was a wildly popular, big-block, affordable muscle car with great graphics and a cool beep-beep horn. The public loved it.
All In Detail Series books include an introduction and historical overview, an explanation of the design and concepts involved in creating the car, a look at marketing and promotion, and an in-depth study of all hardware and available options, as well as an examination of where the car is on the market today. Also included is an appendix of paint and option codes, VIN and build-tag decoders, as well as production numbers.

Original Dodge and Plymouth B-Body Muscle 1966-1970
The B-body accounted for a wide range of Chrysler Corporation muscle cars of the sixties and seventies, including the Charger, Road Runner, Super Bee, Satellite, GTX, and Coronet R/T. These cars brought a great deal of character to the muscle car scene and continue to be extremely popular today, particularly with Mopar fans, some of the most rabid car enthusiasts there are. As an Original series title, this book will detail the correct parts, finishes, options, and trim pieces for all the b-body cars of this era. The wide variety of engine options, from Hemi to Wedge to Ram, will be covered in detail, as will all the special editions that featured wild colors and unique bodywork--elements that were crucial to the mystique of these cars. The book will be filled with high-quality, detailed photos of cars that are either excellent originals or very accurate restorations.About the AuthorJim Schild is the publisher of The Auto Review and is the author of eight automotive books, including four for Motorbooks International. Plymouth and Chrysler-built cars Complete Owner’s Handbook of Repair and Maintenance, 1946-1955
This Plymouth Handbook deals mainly with the 1955 Plymouth and Dodge models but some space has been given to other Chrysler products.
Although many components and repair procedures are the same for all Chrysler-built cars there are also many differences and it is of course impossible to deal with all these various aspects in a book this size. However, we have endeavored to make the best possible selection of subjects considered to be the most important to the average owner. Also many repair procedures on the more popular older models have been included and considerable attention has been given to the repair and adjustment of older type transmissions.
The Hy-Drive and PowerFlite automatic transmissions are discussed in considerable detail, but mainly with the object of familiarizing the reader with the operation and construction of these units. It should be borne in mind that these transmissions (the PowerFlite in particular) are highly complicated and adjustments and repairs should be left only to those who possess the necessary know-how, experience and equipment to perform these delicate operations.
To a great extent the same holds true for the Power Steering units and the electrical gear (starter motor, generator voltage regulator).
Many thanks are due to the Chrysler Division, Plymouth Division, Dodge Division and De Soto Division of the Chrysler Corporation who have been kind enough to furnish extensive service information and the material upon which this handbook is based.
